Adams Chapel Baptist Church
228 Adams Chapel Road
Dresden, TN 38225-1802

Adams Chapel  was organized in August of 1907 with a few charter members.  Until a formal building could be built, they met in the Adams Academy School located just down the road from the present church building.  The land for the church grounds was given by Henry & Mary Adams, Almus & Lue Adams, and Joe & Marthay Adams.  The first building was a one-room frame building valued at that time at $1,000.00.  The first dedication service was held in 1909 with Bro. Jackson preaching the sermon.

Through the years there have been several changes, additions, and renovations made.  In 1947 the present building was built and the first service in the new building held on the fourth Sunday in November.  This building was bricked in 1962 along with other needed interior improvements.  Additions were made in 1979 and 1984 which provided more room for church growth expansion.

The church is located just south of Highway #22 mid-way between Dresden and Martin.           The present pastor is Rev. Larry Reagan.  Address: 197 Latta Road, Dresden, Tennessee 38225.   Home phone: 731-364-6724. Church phone: 731-364-5707.

The church belonged to the Sentinel Association until 1853 when it changed to the North Western Association and then when the Weakley County Baptist Association was organized in 1887, they were a charter member.

The church has continued to flourish for over 150 years.  Many building programs, renovations, and other promotions have marked the success of the seed planted so many years ago in the Gleason community.  Thirty-eight different men have served as pastor of this church.  The current pastor is Rev. Bethel Baptist Church
 659 Shafter Road / P.O. Box 135
Greenfield, TN 38230

Bethel Baptist Church was organized May 1, 1847 by Rev. David Fleming and his wife Caroline.  Bro. Fleming and his wife, along with several others, moved their letter from the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church at Martin, Tennessee,

This young church met for a few years in various places in the community.  In 1856, a committee was formed to find a site on which to build a permanent meeting house.  Hugh McKelvy donated two acres of land at the present site and deeded it to Bethel Baptist Church to be used as a meetinghouse forever.  A building was erected in 1857 on the present site and it remained until 1897 when it was torn down and a white frame building was built.  That building continued to be used until 1947 when a new brick building was constructed and continues to this day with additions in 1968, 1973, and 1987.

Bethel Baptist Church joined the Western District Association in 1848 and remained there until 1891 when they withdrew and joined the Weakley County Baptist Association, which had been formed in 1887.  Preaching was held on the first Sunday of each month until 1948 when it went to “half-time” and then in 1951 to “full time.”  Rev. Willie Chadwick organized the first Sunday School in 1919, Discipleship Training was organized in 1950 and the WMU came into being in 1959.  All these organizations remain strong to this day.

Land was donated by Mr. Paul Huffstetler and a new meeting house ‘40 X ‘32 was built at the present location and the first service held in the new building in June 1944.  Wooden planks were set on concrete blocks for seats, and kerosene lamps were used for lighting.  There was only a sub-floor in the building at this time.  The church also observed the Lord’s Supper at this service.

There have been at lease five major building programs through the years at Bethlehem, including the construction of a new, modern structure completed in 1991 that seats over 300.  Since 1942, seventeen pastors have served the church with the longest tenure being that of Roy Auvenshine who served from March 1976 until his sudden death in December of 2007.  Membership had grown to 486 in 2001.

Bible Union Baptist Church
2852 Bible Union Road / P.O. Box 522
Martin, TN 38237

Very little is known of the early history of the church as most of the older records were destroyed when the home of a church clerk burned.

The church voted to organize the first Sunday School at the regular business meeting on March 7, 1925 with Bro. V.P. Prince, pastor, acting as moderator and A. M. Parham serving as church clerk.

In 1956, under the leadership of the Lord and with the guidance of Pastor Gerald Green, the church was built which is now being used.  Total costs, including furniture was $19,626.67.  Some labor and material was donated by members, neighbors, and friends of the church including the local National Guard Unit who dug the basement.

C

Calvary Baptist Church
432 Old State Route #118
Dresden, TN 38225

In September, 1942 Rev. R. J. Cooper, County Missionary, came to Latham with his tent and set it up for a meeting with Rev. Lynn Claybrook doing the preaching and Rev. Cayce Pentecost leading the singing.  They held a ten-day meeting with many souls saved.  Out of this meeting grew the idea for a Baptist Church in Latham.  On October 4, 1942 in the home of  Mrs. Sam Lochridge, Calvary Baptist Church was organized with the following members.  Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Williams, Mrs. Lula Jones, Mrs. Verdie Rea, Huron Mosley,  Ann Lou Lochridge, Betty Sue Lochridge, Mrs. Verlie Lochridge, William Fuller, Ruby Fuller and Dorothy Yates.  After the reading of portions of  First Corinthians by Rev. Lynn Claybrook, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Dresden, and after prayer, those above mentioned names presented letters showing that they were in good  standing and full fellowship with their respective churches.  The New Hampshire Confession of Faith and the Baptist Church Covenant were read.  Then upon motion and second it was voted to enter into the organization of a church based on the Confession of Faith and Covenant as above read.

Permission was given to use Bible Union School until a church building could be built.  Huron Mosley gave the land where the church now stands.  Some gave logs and different things toward the construction of the church building.  Other men and women donated labor.  Huron Mosley was our first Clerk and Treasurer.

On August 29, 1943, though the church building wasn’t complete, in business meeting we voted to have services in the new building.  The windows were not installed yet nor was the building sealed.  Bro. R. J. Cooper preached the first sermon in the new church building.  His subject was “Life.”  Ten souls were added to the church that day.  That started the first revival where Bro. Cayce Pentecost preached for a week.  Thirty-eight souls were saved and some more came by letter.  The following Sunday September 3, 1943,  Bro. R. J. Cooper baptized 38 down the Obion river at the bridge.  Bro. Cooper was the first pastor of the church.

God has been good to Calvary Baptist Church to this present day and remains a light house in the Latham community.  Sunday School meets at 9:00 A.M. and worship at 10:00 A.M. and 6:00 P.M. each Sunday. Wednesday services are at 7:00 P.M. The pastor is Rev. Robert Tuck, 340 Phelps Street, Gleason, Tennessee 38229. His home phone number is 648-5700.

Central Baptist Church

801 Harrison Road
Martin, TN 38237

On May 7, 1922, with Lloyd T. Wilson of Nashville, Tennessee acting as Moderator, 100 members of Martin Baptist Church, now First Baptist Church, were granted letters for the purpose of organizing another Baptist Church in Martin, Tennessee.  On Wednesday evening, May 10, 1922, this organization took place in the City High School Auditorium.  Bro. Eugene Ferrell of Hall-Moody College, a Baptist school here, was in charge of the song service; the Rev. Terry Martin conducted the devotional with prayer being led by the Rev. W. A. Butler and special music by Mrs. Beulah Adams, who  sang “Use Me.”  The Rev. T. N. Hale of Dresden, Tennessee preached a sermon on “The New Testament Church.”  The list of 100 members from Martin Baptist Church was read and received in a body and declared to be an independent Baptist Church.  Pendelton’s Church Covenant and Articles of Faith were read and unanimously adopted.

Having become a church, the next order of business was the selecting of a name and, without difficulty, the name Central was settled upon.  The doors of the church were then opened and 16 people united with the church by letter from other Baptist Churches and Central has been growing ever since.  The church worshipped in an old tobacco barn on Main Street until January 7, 1923, when they moved into their new site on University Street.  When the Weakley County Baptist Association met that fall, Central sent a request to join, which was granted, thus  becoming a part of the Baptist work in the county and also in the state.

The church has had a prosperous past and anticipates a promising future. They have had many mountaintop experiences, many difficult and trying times, but  the Lord has used them to draw the church closer to Him.  In the fall of 2008 the church relocated to a site on Sky Hawk Parkway just south of the city which will provide even great opportunities for ministry to the Martin community in the future.

There has been a steady line of Godly men to lead the church as pastor.  Today’s pastor is Rev. Roger Lipe who lives at 413 Sand Hill Road, Martin, Tennessee 38237.  His phone number is 588-0247 and the church’s phone number is 587-5311.

Corinth Baptist Church
327 Corinth Road
Sharon, TN 38255-3473

Corinth Baptist Church was organized after the Civil War in the late 1860’s, making it one of the oldest churches in this area.  Graves Fonville and H. C. Roberts donated approximately two acres of land for the building of the church in March 1869.  Some of the charter members of Corinth Baptist were Redding Witherington, Mrs. Bede Fonville, Mr. Charles Owen, Bro. Bill Allen, and Mr. M. E. Bruce.

During the summers from 1880 to 1900, members built brush arbors and placed straw on the ground for revival meetings.  They would hold the Sunday School from spring to late fall and close out for the winter.  One of the first preachers to serve the church was Rev. Holliburton.  Some of the preachers following him were L. H. Pettit, 1870,  W. B. Clifton, 1892-1898, and W. B. Russell, 1899-1904.

Information gathered from reading old minutes stated that in the early 1900’s there was much discussion about the need for a church in town.  It is not known whether any members of the Corinth Church went to help organized the First Baptist Church in Sharon.  There was an older member of the Corinth Church, who died a few years ago, that remembered when his daddy took him and some boys with his mules and wagon and helped haul logs for the building in town.

The first Corinth Church building stood on the same spot from 1869 to 1905.  The second church building was hit by a tornado two different times.  The second time around, 1944, the tornado completely destroyed the church building.  The present building was build at that time.

On August 1, 1884, land for the Corinth Cemetery was purchased from S. T. Witherington and his wife for $25.00.  It is said that the first person buried in the cemetery was the child of Mr. Monroe, a workman helping to build the Illinois-Central Railroad through Sharon.  While preaching in a revival meeting at the Corinth Church in the early 1930’s, Oscar Phillips collapsed in the pulpit and was DOA at the hospital.  Rev. Phillips, his son, and a grand son are buried at the Corinth Cemetery.

            Additional pastors who have served the Corinth Church, through the years are:  Bro. Walters, 1904-1905;  W. C. Underwood, 1905-1906;  L. D. Summers, 1907;  W. C. Glen, 1907-1910;  C. H. Felts, 1910-1915;  H. W. Jackson, 1915-1917;  W. C. Tharp, 1918-1919;  W. A. Butler, 1919-1921;  A. A. Jones, 1921-1923;  J. O. Yates, 1924-1925;  Cletus Moore, 1948-1950;  Harold Grissom, 1950-1964;  Robert Wall, 1964-1965;  Ben Kimbrough, 1965-1967;  Glen McDaniel, 1967-1969;  Donnie Smith, 1970-1971;  E. F. Caldwell,  1971-1977;  Billy Hicks, 1977-1978;  Virgil Blankenship, 1978-1980;  Phillip Mansfield, 1980-1982, Mayo Mansfield, 1982-1988;  John Clark, 1988-1994; Gerry Gallimore 1995-2008.

The pastor for Corinth is Thurman Neal Penick who lives at 3279 Pleasant Hill Road, Martin, Tennessee, 38237.  His phone number is 587-5862 and the church phone number is 456-2364.

Gleason First Baptist Church
301 So. Cedar
Gleason, TN 38229

On December 10, 1879, James Smythe sold one acre for $50.00 to the Gleason Baptist Church.  The deed was recorded on February 2, 1880, at 4:20 P.M.  This one acre is the present site of the Gleason First Baptist Church.

In the fall of 1887, the Weakley County Baptist Association was formed and Gleason First Baptist was one of the charter members and listed as such in the first minutes. From the records the church must have been organized in the latter part of 1887.

The first pastor recorded was  G. C. Hearn in 1888.  The first mentioned salary for the pastor was $150.00 per year.  The church met only once a month in those days. The total membership of the church was 33 and the associational minutes recorded the contribution of this church as $1.00.  However, the entire association, consisting of 21 churches, contributed only $22.75.  The church first entertained the Associational Annual meeting in 1892.

On July 1, 1922, the church decided to have a “house cleaning” by disbanding.  They reorganized the same day and  received those coming forth as the members of the new church.  Bro. Willie Chadwick was pastor at that time.
